You couldn’t have missed the smell of pork barbecue wafting through the air if you made it out to Clyde Cooper’s 75th Anniversary Party this past Saturday.
Hundreds of people lined up outside next to Clyde Cooper’s restaurant last Saturday, some with their furry friends in tow, eager to pay five dollars to gain entrance into the all-you-can-eat pork affair that was celebrating 75 years of Clyde’s Coopers BBQ. Half the party’s proceeds were also being donated to the SPCA.
With live music from Under Cover jamming to the side, barbecue lovers, families and dogs milled around the lot filled with pitmasters under their tents chopping 'cue, enjoying the sunny weather while sampling barbecue from pitmasters from across North Carolina, including Skylight Inn’s Sam Jones and Smokey Dave’s BBQ’s David Burch. Each sample of barbecue was doled out in numbered plastic cups and festival-goers were encouraged to vote for their favorite barbecue with a ticket ballot.
After all votes were tabulated, Jones of Skylight Inn placed first, taking the trophy and the top prize. Mike Robinson placed second and Burch of Smokey Dave’s came in third.
