Big chill: Extreme cold grips Denver with extended period of sub-freezing temps

Arctic air has settled in on northeastern Colorado and brought with it bone-chilling cold and light snow. Wind chill advisories and warnings have been issued as the area is seeing some of its coldest temperatures in years.

Virtually every location from the Front Range foothills to our eastern borders was seeing sub-zero temperatures this morning. Wind chill temperatures were dropping to as far as 30 or more degrees below zero.

The dangerous cold has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Wind Chill Advisory for the Colorado Front Range including Denver and a Wind Chill Warning for areas to the east and northeast.

In effect until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, the service cautions that the extreme cold temperatures could lead to frostbite and hypothermia. Residents should take appropriate precautions and likely avoid prolonged exposure to the outdoors.

Daytime is going to provide only minimal relief from the overnight cold. High temperatures today will be in the low single digits in many locations with Denver expecting a high of only 5 degrees. Overnight lows tonight will once again drop to well below zero degrees.

Light snow will be possible in the mountains, foothills and Front Range this afternoon into this evening. Only minimal accumulations are expected with less than a half inch forecast for Denver.

Looking ahead, periods of snow will continue to be possible through the weekend. Temperatures will see some gradual moderation Friday and into the weekend.
