TAMPA, FLORIDA - Legendary Columbia Records recording artists, Big Brother and the Holding Company, has chosen Tampa singer, Eileen Humphreys, to fill in as lead singer for the band's up-coming show in Catanzaro, Italy on September 6. News of the band's decision came early this morning following an announcement made by Humphreys on her personal facebook page. The St. Petersburg Live Music Bar Scene Column has since confirmed the news with Big Brother and the Holding Company's representation, Steve Keyser of Savoy Music International.
Big Brother and the Holding Company formed in San Francisco in 1965, and were part of the same psychedelic music scene that produced other legendary bands of that era such as The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. The band is best known for their former lead singer, Janis Joplin, who fronted the band 1966-1968. Their 1968 album, Cheap Thrills, featured the band’s hit song, and Joplin’s signature tune, “Piece of my Heart.” Cheap Thrills is arguably considered one of the greatest albums to ever come out of the 1960's San Francisco psychedelic scene. The album reached #1 on the Billboard Charts, and was ranked #338 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of all Time." Cheap Thrills is also included in Robert Dimery’s 2005 book, “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.”
Big Brother and the Holding Company still features three of it’s original members including Sam Andrew (guitar & vocals), Peter Albin (bass), and David Getz (drums). In addition, the band also includes Ben Nieves (guitar) and Cathy Richardson (lead vocals).
Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Eileen Humphreys relocated to the Tampa Bay are in the early 1990's. Since then, she has fronted several local bands including Night Wing, Champ, and Smoke and Run. Currently, Humphreys is the lead singer for both Phoenix, formed in 2004, and Barracuda, a Heart tribute band. Humphreys is considered by many to be one of the best female lead vocalists currently performing in the Tampa Bay area.
“I am beyond excited and humbled to have this opportunity to share a stage with the founding members... guitarist, Sam Andrew and bassist Peter Albin of this absolutely legendary band. To be able to share a stage with the friends and bandmates of one of my vocal heroes, the incomparable Janis Joplin, is just… I mean, there are no words to describe what I’m feeling right now!” - Eileen Humphreys
