Not only did “Big Brother 15” appear to be a season of racism, homophobia, and sexism, but it was also the year of uncomfortable showmances – one of them dubbed “McCranda,” or the relationship between McCrae Olson and Amanda Zuckerman. On Sept. 19, 2013, McCrae posted a Twitter message calling Amanda his “ball and chain…”
This was in response to a tweet from “Big Brother Canada’s” A.J. Burman, who posted a photo from the night before captioned “Late night Goofing off with my #bbfam.” Thus, it appears McCrae skipped out on the fun to be with Amanda.
Basically, McCrae apologized in his tweet, writing, “…sorry brother man… my ball and chain wanted me to go to bed with her :(“
This started a conversation going in between McCrae’s followers, with one, @EdwinMontanez, writing, “…worst thing about this season was you and Amanda together. Even worse than the racism.”
After some criticism from other Twitter followers, @EdwinMontanez added, “I love McCrae… not him and Amanda.”
McCranda began week one in the “Big Brother 15” house when Amanda, a real estate agent from Florida, appeared to aggressively seduce the quiet, unassuming pizza boy McCrae after he won the first Head of Household and had the private bedroom to himself. They remained a couple the entire season, but as many house guests expressed to McCrae, he seemed to lose his spark and the light in his eyes once he and Amanda became a couple.
Most of their time in the house, as seen on live feeds and on various episodes of “Big Brother 15,” they were laying in bed doing basically nothing.
Amanda, depicted as having a harshly abrasive and overbearing personality, did most of the talking for the two during "Big Brother 15" and was one of the house guests seen and heard making offense and insensitive comments regarding race, sexual orientation, and disability.
At one point, she became so enraged at fellow house mate Elissa, that she spent around two days relentlessly taunting her. Amanda later admitted her bullying behavior and apologized for the incident.
At one point Amanda was so hated by the public, several petitions appeared on the Internet asking CBS to yank her from the game. In addition, she was put up for eviction twice by the public when America was given the power to choose who it wanted to go home.
Inside the house, McCranda could be heard discussing McCrae moving to Florida to be with Amanda, but outside the “Big Brother 15” game, it is unclear if their showmance will sustain itself in the real world.
McCrae’s tweet may be one indication the relationship is headed south, but only time will tell…
