If an ice-cold brew sounds pretty good to you right about now, go grab your glass. According to a Canadian Beer News report published on May 2, thirsty folks around the world are ready to celebrate Big Brew 2014 in honor of National Homebrew Day! While the refreshing holiday is dedicated to beer, the annual occasion also celebrates friendship, companionship and the fine craft of brewing beer. This year's event takes place on May 3, 2014.
National Homebrew Day & Big Brew Day
On May 7, 1988, National Homebrew Day was announced before the United States Congress. The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) created Big Brew, an annual worldwide event observed on the first Saturday in May to celebrate National Homebrew Day.
Last year, 8,500 people from 14 countries participated in Big Brew 2013 and brewed 17,000 gallons. Now that’s a lot of beer! This year, thousands of folks from all over the world will participate in the event by brewing gold winning recipes including Regal Pale Ale, Split Open and Melt Imperial Stout and/or Black Dog Lager Shwarzbier. And get ready to raise your glass at noon CDT for the Simultaneous Toast, too.
If you’d like to participate in the Big Brew event, be sure to register online. There are free materials you can download to help get the word out. And if you’d like more information on how to brew your own beer, be sure to visit the AHA website for helpful step-by-step tips, tutorials, videos and refreshing recipes. And don't forget to share your National Homebrew Day celebrations and experiences with other beer lovers on Facebook and Twitter.
And speaking of refreshing holidays - National Orange Juice Day, National Beverage Day, National Cosmopolitan Day, National Have a Coke Day, National Moscato Day and National Wine and Cheese Day are all coming up this month, too.
As always, please drink responsibly.
