The 'Big Bang Theory' engagement delighted fans of the hit show and news of Leonard's proposal sent the Twitterverse into a frenzy. As pointed out by Today on Friday, after years of dating and several rejected proposals between them, Leonard finally popped the big question on Thursday's "The Gorilla Dissolution," the penultimate episode of season seven. The 'Big Bang Theory' engagement happened after a bad day at work forces Penny to reassess her life choices.

“Getting fired from that movie was the best thing that could have happened to me–I finally realized I don’t need to be famous or have some big career to be happy,” Penny tells Leonard. She then suggests, “We could get married.” Leonard (Johnny Galecki) then gets on one knee and produces a ring then confesses that he had been keeping it in his wallet for years.

Back in Feb., Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting hinted at the possibility of a 'Big Bang Theory' engagement when she told the Hollywood Reporter..."I'm ready for them to get married," she said. "Maybe because I just got married -- so come on Penny and Leonard, it's been six years! It took us six months! But I hope that's in the cards for them."

Shortly after news of the 'Big Bang Theory' engagement hit the web, Twitter exploded with comments from fans such as...."I'm more excited about Penny and Leonards engagement on @BigBang_CBS than I am about my college graduation tomorrow! #PennyAndLeonard." Another user wrote..."Sitting here bawling at Leonard giving Penny the ring he's been carrying in his wallet! #BigBangTheory."

The executive producer of TV's most successful sitcom, Steve Molaro, recently hinted that the couple would reach its most critical point in the last episodes of the seventh season. And it seems that many things could change ahead of the eighth season.

The Big Bang Theory premiered in the fall of 2007 as a hilarious sitcom revolving around a group of characters with an IQ far beyond the ordinary, and who are really awkward in their social relationships. In short, they are real geeks. The feminine touch is provided by the neighbor Penny, a waitress who brings the look of a normal person. The series includes constant references to theories and physical principles simplified enough to be understood by most viewers.

The Gorilla Dissolution was an episode where the good feelings outweighed humor. However, it allows a great staging for couples and leads us quietly to the last installment of the season. Meanwhile, the love story of Raj is advancing and although Emily ( Laura Spencer ) will not appear on the season finale, Molaro has ensured us that she will be back in the eighth season of the show.
