Yes, that's right the movie starring Tom Hanks, Robert Loggia, and Elizabeth Perkins is 25 years young. In the movie a young boy wants to be big. He goes to a local carnival and because of his size he is not able to get on some rides. Problem is there is a beautiful girl from school and he gets embarrassed. He wishes to big at one of the games at the carnival. Next morning he has his wish, he is bigger. Now here is the problem how to succeed when you still have the mind of a 12 year old. You grow up fast and in a short time, and that is what he does.
This is one of those movies that on a Sunday morning you will stop all that you are doing just to watch it once again, like I did yesterday. It wasn't until CNN mentioned that it was 25 years old that I thought, hey it's still a cute movie and let's give it a shout out.
Hanks eventually will land a great job at a toy manufacturer and even gets a girlfriend until he realizes that he is really in over his head and wants to be a kid again. That is the ironic point of the movie. I remember as a child I always wanted to be bigger or older. Now that I'm a 52 year old man I would give a quarter to become young again. I know it's not going to happen. That's why we have movies, so that we can escape into another world. 'Big' gives us an escape and a big laugh as well. As we sit and watch Zack spend his first paycheck on pizza and silly string we remember. Well, with my first paycheck I would spend it on gas for my car and also on junk food but it was different.
'Big' has outlasted many other films that were made about the same time and still finds a place in our hearts. Like I said it allows us a break from the daily grind of life. So if you get a chance over the next few days while your off for the holiday's and your tired of all the same thing, find a copy of 'Big' and remember when you were small. Enjoy.
