A man bicycling on U.S. 1 in Ormond Beach was killed in a traffic accident Thursday night according to the Florida Highway Patrol. FHP spokesperson Wanda Diaz says the man, who presently remains unidentified until relatives are notified, was riding his bicycle north on U.S. 1 “…in the middle of the roadway wearing dark clothes and [with] no lights observed” around 9:17 Thursday evening. Troopers also report that the road was wet at the time and that it was sprinkling. As a southbound vehicle approached, the FHP says the bicyclist traveled “…in the center of southbound U.S. 1 in a dark area...” and the left front of the vehicle struck the cyclist.
Troopers say the vehicle pulled over immediately after the crash, but that the cyclist was also hit by three other southbound vehicles after the accident. Those vehicles did not stop afterwards. The cyclist was also not wearing a helmet, according to troopers. According to Florida 511, the accident happened south of the I-95/U.S. 1 interchange in Volusia County.
