The suspect in a hit and run crash that led to the death of a bicyclist on the afternoon of Aug. 30 near Rainier is in custody, according to the Oregon State Police. The agency is investigating the fatal hit and run incident that occurred just west of Rainier. The westbound lane is reportedly blocked, but the state police say that traffic is getting around the scene.
Police haven't released any names or many details, but they say that the crash occurred at 2:56 p.m. The incident involved a pickup truck and a bicyclist near milepost 50 on Highway 30; within minutes of the report, an Oregon State Police trooper stopped the vehicle and detained the driver near milepost 55. The bicyclist was thrown from the bicycle. As emergency responders arrived, the rider was pronounced dead.
The Columbia County District Attorney's Office was notified and will assist investigators are needed. No names are expected to be released until later tonight. This is a developing story and we will continue to follow the story, updating when new information is released.
The area has been the site of multiple crashes this year, including one near milepost 52 that killed a St. Helens teenager.
