Bicyclist, 54, dragged to his death after being struck by hit-and-run driver

A 54-year-old Atlanta man was dragged to his death after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding a bike Saturday night in northwest Atlanta.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the man’s identity as Mr. Walter Amey.

And Atlanta police on Sunday continued their search for the driver who struck him on Abner Place, not far from his home.

When the first officer responded to Abner Place and Mary George Avenue it was to investigate a shooting, police spokesman Sgt. Greg Lyon said.

The officer found the victim on the ground being treated by Grady EMS and the emergency workers told the officer that the man’s injury did not appear to be a gunshot wound.

Mr. Amey was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

“Grady advised the victim's wounds were consistent with being struck by a vehicle and dragged,” Sgt. Lyon said.

Now police are anyone with information about the incident to contact police.

Mr. Amey’s daughter, Ms. Monica Amey, told Channel 2 Action News her dad was very athletic and enjoyed biking and running.

She said he was returning from a friend’s home when he was hit.

“I know everybody has a conscience and I would ask them to at least come forward, say what you did,” Ms. Amey told Channel 2. “There is an innocent man, who had family, a daughter. And he was taken.”
