A 13-year-old bicyclist died after being struck by two vehicles Wednesday afternoon in Gwinnett County. And police said the incident happened after the teen ran a stop sign.

The wreck happened shortly after 2 p.m. on Club and Woodstream Drive near Lawrenceville, according to Gwinnett County police. Investigators said Justin Shaw, of Lawrenceville, was riding his bicycle east on Woodstream Drive with the intention to turn left on Club Drive when the wreck happened.

Shaw was riding downhill when he approached the posted stop sign on Woodstream Drive, but he did not stop at the stop sign and entered Club Drive, police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.

Cynthia Hopkins, of Lawrenceville, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox southbound on Club Drive when the 49-year-old woman saw the bicyclist turn on Club Drive, police said. She applied the brakes. But she was unable to stop and struck the teen, Ritter said.

Wei Chen, 24, of Lawrenceville, was driving a 2011 Honda Accord northbound on Club Drive when he saw car hit the bicycle, Ritter said. The impact caused the bicyclist to enter the northbound lane in front of Chen’s vehicle. Chen could not avoid the bicyclist and struck the teen after he was hit by the first vehicle, Ritter said.

Shaw was transported by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Ritter said. The Lawrenceville teen was later flown to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston where he was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m., the spokesman said.

Police said no charges are expected to be filed against either driver involved in the wreck, but the investigation is still on-going. Neither driver was injured in the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Gwinnett County police.
