January 22, 2011 was a night to remember at Cynergy Cycles in Santa Moncia, CA at the launch of the Kit Karzen Foundation. A red carpet event that brought cycling enthusiasts from all over Southern California together to launch what is sure to be a successful organization. Kit Karzen spared nothing, starting the foundation in style, from goldsprints to food trucks to a photo op with a Bugatti; a spectacular display, and it's just the beginning.
The Kit Karzen Foundation strives to help kids and teens living with ADHD by promoting cycling as an alternative to medication. The foundation assists existing organizations such as 1000Bikes, and the Encino Velodrome Association. It all started when Karzen was eight years old and diagnosed with ADHD. He spent several years as a child and teen on and off medications. After dealing with side effects and complications for years Karzen finally ditched the medications for a side effects free life; ADHD and all. Shortly after, Karzen picked up a bicycle. Using exercise as an alternative form of medication Karzen was born again and has enjoyed every moment since.
Now, not only is Karzen much happier with his medication free approach to remedy ADHD, but he is giving back to the community, he says: "I am so excited to finally launch the foundation. It's an honor to help provide opportunities to kids with ADHD, the same way that cycling brought opportunities to me." The foundation has started with a bang, already donating, through partner Specialized Bicycles, ten track bikes to the Encino Velodrome Association; and two bikes to the 1000Bikes program that were autographed at the event by two local track cycling Olympians.
