Biblical New Year’s Resolutions

The Christmas Holidays always culminate with the ringing in of a new year. The thought and opportunity to begin afresh can sometimes be the basis for New Year’s Resolution. The New Year can be the launching pad for new dreams, goals, plans, and opportunities. It seems that sometimes before February rolls around, though, that New Year’s Resolutions have been long forgotten, or have ended in defeat. I have long ago given up the making of a formal New Year’s Resolutions’ list, although I like to begin the new year with goals and a vision of growth in my faith. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions over the years have been to lose weight, to be more generous, or to get organized.
The promise of a new year can be a perfect opportunity to evaluate the past year, both triumphs and failures. As a Christian, I know that the Bible tells us that God’s mercies are new every morning, so instead of waiting for the new year to come around, I can begin afresh each day, as anyone can. (based on Lamentations 3:22-23)
This year I chose to look at God’s Word to offer me some guidelines in setting the tone for the upcoming year. I dare say that to determine to Love God above all and to love others as I do myself would be a great starting point. Jesus said the law and the prophets hang on those two great commandments. (based on Matthew 22:40)
The Christmas season offered an opportunity to share goodwill and a spirit of love and kindness towards others. It followed a season of reflection and thanksgiving for everything that God has done and is doing in our daily lives. I want that to continue, not just for the New Year, but as part of my daily life; to strive continue to keep an attitude of gratitude.
I found some Bible verses that offer some wonderful New Year’s Resolutions, if I have to so call them. They offer promises, as well. There are so many to choose from, but these are some of my favorites:
“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (KJV)
“I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.” Psalm 119:15 (KJV)
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)
“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:” Deuteronomy 30:19 (KJV)
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's. The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.” Psalm 103:2-6 (KJV)
“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:15 (KJV)
“Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.” Psalm 30:4 (KJV)
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)
The Bible holds a wealth of treasures for the seeker. This is just a sample of the many promises, exhortations, and encouragements offered to those who will resolve to seek God through his Word and prayer.
Many will be making New Year’s Resolutions as the New Year rings in. Some will adhere to them, while others will not. One of the wonderful things God offers is that his mercies are new every morning, so that when we blow it, and everyone does, we can draw on his promise of a new beginning, throughout the New Year and beyond.
Happy New Year!
