Gandhi Bhakthavachalam and Alannah Mendoza captured the Houston Tennis Association Houston Open men’s and women’s open singles championship at Lee LeClear Tennis Center.
Bhakthavachalam of Spring, a 19-year-old freshman at the University of Houston, defeated 28-year-old Willy Lock of Houston, a mechanical engineer at a local research company, 6-3, 7-5. Bhakthavachalam was seeded No. 9 and Lock, No. 5.
In the women’s open singles the fifth-seeded Mendoza of Corpus Christi upset top seed Rachel Janssen of Farmers Branch 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2.
Both champions want to try their skills on the professional circuit and plan to play in some of the USTA Futures tournaments while taking college courses.
Otis Sadler of Missouri City and Damien Spizzo of Houston, the No. 2 seeds, defeated Austinites Ned Boone and Alejandro Gonzalez 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 for the men’s open doubles title, and top seeds Jordan McCombs of Pasadena and Megan Schumulbach of Houston claimed the women’s open doubles title in a walkover/emergency over the No. 2 seeds, Janssen and Mendoza.
Houstonians James Bui and Jamie Cohen won the mixed open doubles title over Melissa Fuller of San Antonio and Gonzalez 3-6, 5-4, retired/quit.

The tournament accepted almost 700 players.
