BFA-St. Albans falls to Champlain Valley in D-I boys hockey semifinals

Champlain Valley ended a 10-game playoff losing streak to BFA-St. Albans with a 3-1 win over the Bobwhites in the Division I boys hockey semfinals at UVM's Gutterson Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.

Derek Goodwin, Jeffrey Thompson and Ethan Childs scored for the second-seeded Redhawks, who advance to the title game for the fourth straight season.

Mayson Kropf, Griffin Brady, J.P. Benoit, Robbie Dobrowski, Kyle Logan and Erick MacLean assisted on the goals and Jason O'Brien turned aside 32 shots.

For third-seeded BFA, Sean Rocheleau scored in the third period, assisted by Mike Schreiner and Nick Wiliams. Tyler Kilburn stopped 23 shots.

The Redhawks will take on Essex in the state title game. The top-seeded Hornets edged Spaulding 3-2 in Wednesday's other semifinal.

The title game is Tuesday back at 'The Gut.'

Essex will be aiming for its 14th title in 18 championship game appearences. The Hornets have now won seven straight semifinal games and their win was the sixth straight in the playoffs against the Crimson Tide.

CVU will be gunning for its fourt overall title and second in Division I. They have a combined 3-8 record in state title games in Division I and II.

The Redhawks are now 12-3 in their last 15 semifinals after going 0-for-8 in their first eight chances.

Essex beat CVU for the title in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2009.

Given that the Redhawks snapped an oh-fer against the Bobwhites this season, perhaps they are due end another streak on Tuesday.
