If you like the music of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Dio, this Friday night there will be an awesome band playiing at the Boiler Room in Deep Ellum that you need to check out - Bezel. The band is made up of guys you might recognize; they have all been around in the Dallas music scene for quite a while. Band members are Kevin Dell Greer (vocals), Keith Oliver (guitar), Mike Herrel (bass), and Mark McCrocklin (drums). When these guys come together, something magical happens. Bezel recently released a new Cd, entitled simply Bezel, that has been in my car CD player since the night I got it. It is amazing!
I interviewed Bezel's frontman, Kevin Greer, in order to fill possible new fans, along with old friends and fans, in on some of the background of the band. It went like this:
How did you decide upon Bezel as the name of the band?
"It's really hard to agree on a name. One of the guys had written the name on our rehearsal room whiteboard, as a working title for a new song. I knew what a "bezel" was, like a watch bezel, or a bezel on a precious jewel, but I decided to look it up in the dictionary. The definition is a metal band with a groove. There was no question after that. We all agreed."
How did the band members come togither?
"I had heard Keith Oliver, Mike Herrell and Mark McCrocklin in another band, Clone Mike, and REALLY liked their sound, but they were working with another singer at the time. About a year later, I noticed a new post on Facebook and Clone Mike was looking for a vocalist. I answered immediately and told the guys to take the post down. I was their guy."
Who does the songwriting?
"Everyone in the band writes the songs. I write most of the lyrics. We all take credit collectively."
Tell me about the recently released CD.
"It took a year to write and record the album. We used our own recording studio, Bezel Labs. We mixed it ourselves and had it mastered at Crystal Clear Sound on the Neve Masterpiece Analog Mastering System, a very rare, handmade board. We also did all the packaging ourselves. We just couldn't trust it to anyone else."
What is your favorite song on the CD?
"I would say everyone's favorite song on the CD is a toss up between Damage Done and Devil Wind."
What is your favorite song to perform onstage that is not an original Bezel song?
"Our favorite cover song to perform live is Black Sabbath's The Wizard. I love to get the chance to play some harmonica on it, and the drummer enjoys the challenge of the drums on that one."
How would you compare Bezel to Strangers, one of your previous bands?
"It's hard to compare Strangers and Bezel. I've been told by quite a few people that Bezel sounds like Strangers on steroids. I find Bezel to be a little more progressive than Strangers. The guys in Bezel are not afraid to experiment and push some limits."
Do you have any upcoming shows scheduled?
"Our final show for 2013 is at The Boiler Room Friday the 6th. We are currently working on a new album. We were supposed to open for Michael Schenker at Trees in January, but he had to cancel. We will open for a major act early in the New Year."
Where can your CD be purchased?
"Our CD's can be purchased on itunes, amazon.com, rhapsody and CD Baby. Of course at our shows also."
Now that you know a little bit more about this very talented local band, I hope that you will come out to the Boiler Room this Friday night, and hear them for yourself! Also performing will be Mahogany Head Rush, Blind Riders, and Beryl Court. (A Bezel CD would be a perfect Christmas gift for any music lover.) Also, you could wish Keith Oliver a belated Happy Birthday, as his birthday is December 5th. See you at the Boiler Room!
Update: Last weekend Bezel unfortunately had to cancel their show at the Boiler Room due to the inclement weather. You can still have the chance to see this band perform live, as they are now on the schedule for Saturday night at Reno's Chop Shop, located at 210 N. Crowdus in Deep Ellum. Come on out!
