This past weekend the Beyond/In Western New York, Buffalo's own biennial, opened at various art galleries in the city. Special events occurred at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Squeaky Wheel, Buffalo Arts Studio, and the Burchfield Penny Art Center, to name a few.
The artists on view in this exhibit are from western NewYork or a surrounding area. Some artists come from as far as Ontario and Ohio. Beyond/In Western New York showcases artwork created with a variety of media, both traditional and non-traditional. There are paintings, video installations, sculptures, fabric pieces, etc.
The Albright-Knox chose to both interweave the Beyond/In artists within their permanent collection and in a separate exhibit section. Some of the works, like the paintings by Richard Huntington, are placed next to old, yet related works. The curator did this in such a way that the placement brings on additional meaning to the work.
Throughout the entire gallery, Micah Lexier's "Projects" are attached to walls; they are imprinted with simple, descriptive statements about their positioning in the gallery. Following these sculpted, metal arrows reminds one of going on a treasure hunt.
Upstairs in the Albright-Knox is the bulk of the Beyond/In artists. Penelope Stewart's beeswax tiles welcome the viewer to the exhibit, which includes artists like Kara Walker, Victoria Bradbury, and Marshall Scheuttle.
The gallery does not hold all of its Beyond/In works within its walls. One intriguing work by Do Ho Suh, entitled "Karma" overlooks the entrance to the 198E. The piece is created from a stack of sculpted bodies places atop of one another and decreasing in size.
Though the special events have come and gone, these works, and others will be on display at the Albright-Knox until January 16.
