Quantic Dream has announced a new “Dual Mode” for their upcoming game, Beyond: Two Souls. This two-player mode was revealed during a Gamescom presentation led by David Cage, the game's creator. While the single-player mode allows gamers to switch between playing as Jodie and the ghostly presence of Aiden, Dual Mode has two players controlling these characters. Even though two players won't be able to use these characters simultaneously, control can be passed off with the touch of a button. Cage stated that this mode was inspired by the number of people who played Heavy Rain with another person observing their actions.
One surprising announcement that came out of today's presentation was the fact that the entire game will be playable using an iOS or Android phone or tablet as a controller. This functionality, which has been dubbed “Beyond Touch”, lets players download an app on the device of their choice, making that device a compatible controller. From there, every action can be performed with that device's touchscreen. This will allow one player to use the standard DualShock 3 controller, while the other uses a mobile device. Any combination of standard and touch controller are said to work with Dual Mode.
Beyond: Two Souls is set to release in North America on October 8th, and will be a PlayStation 3 exclusive. There hasn't been any mention of a PS4 port.
