John Adams, who recently had a bestselling biography about him turned into a popular miniseries, was one of the most prominent figures in the country during the revolutionary era. He signed the Declaration of Independence, served as George Washington’s vice president and then succeeded him to become the country’s second president.
There are several historical sites just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, that are associated with Adams' life and career. These sites also feature his family members, such as his son, John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States, and his wife Abigail Adams, a prominent and well known First Lady.
Adams National Historic Park
The Adams National Historic Park in Quincy, Massachusetts is the definitive site for anyone interested in learning more about John Adams or John Quincy Adams, or even about other prominent members of this family. The park encompasses 11 buildings and tells the stories of four generations of the Adams family across two centuries.
The main attractions are the birthplaces of John Adams and John Quincy Adams; the Old House, which served as the main residence for four generations of the family, from 1788 to 1927; and the Stone Library, which contains more than 14,000 books that belonged to the family.
United First Parish Church
Located near the Adams National Historic Park is the United First Parish Church, a Unitarian Universalist congregation where the Adams’ worshiped and where both presidents are buried along with their wives in a family crypt.
Abigail Adams Birthplace
For more insight into the Adams family, you might also want to visit the Abigail Adams Birthplace in nearby Weymouth, Massachusetts. Mrs. Adams was the wife and mother of U.S. presidents. She was known to be both close friend and advisor to her husband. She was also the first First Lady to preside over the White House, which was completed during Adams’ presidency.
