Beyonce pays homage to husband Jay-Z with ‘Mrs. Carter Show’ world tour

Beyonce’s announcement of her new world tour less than 24 hours after her Super Bowl show as reported on Feb. 5 by Popular Critic, The Bosh, UPI.com, Marie Claire and countless media outlets, raises a few questions.

The unusual thing about Beyonce’s first world tour almost three years is the name she has chosen:

the Mrs. Carter Show

The Feb. 5 Guardian addresses the question about the Mrs. Carter Show that is uppermost in everyone’s mind -- the question of why Beyonce has decided to do a world tour under her married name.

What compelled Beyonce to give up her first-name-only celebrity stature and perform under her rapper and music mogul husband Jay-Z's surname? NOTE: Jay –Z’s real name is Shawn Carter.

A Supportive and Loving Husband

The Guardian points out that it’s interesting to note the irony of Beyonce’s decision to use her husband’s name at this stage of her career. Especially since it’s a name that her husband Jay-Z himself doesn’t even use.

But Jay-Z has always been a supportive and loving husband to Beyonce. This could be her way of acknowledging her marriage to the world, and paying homage to the man she loves.

After her hugely successful Super Bowl show, Jay-Z was waiting for her backstage with open arms. Beyonce leapt into his arms and he swept her up in a passionate embrace. The Feb. 4 Slate.com points out that the title of the tour shouldn’t come as a surprise since the hip-hop couple are open about their mutual love for one another, observing that “Countdown” is Beyonce’s musical love letter to Jay-Z, and that Jay-Z always talks about wife, Beyonce, in his interviews.

After being together for 6 years they quietly got married in April 2008 in a quiet ceremony with only family and close friends. There were no photos, no announcements, no Kardashian-like fuss and fanfare. No one really knew they were married until almost two years after the fact.

At the 2010 Grammy Awards when Beyonce accepted her Best Female Vocal Performance award she thanked Jay-Z, saying,

"I'd love to thank my family for all their support, including my husband. I love you."

That’s when the world found out Beyonce and Jay-Z were husband and wife. But even then, some people still didn't know.

Fans may recall the fight that erupted between two Ohio men last year who got into a heated argument over Beyonce’s marital status while watching music videos. One man insisted that Beyonce was still single when his friend informed him that she was married to rapper Jay-Z. A fight erupted and one man was stabbed. A silly thing to fight about, to be sure, but when it happened in January 2012, the incident dominated the news.

Whatever the hip-hop couple have going for them obviously works very well. Last year, Beyonce and her media mogul husband, Jay-Z topped Forbes magazine’s 2012 “Highest Paid Celebrity Couples” list with a combined income of just under $80 million. Touring Under the Name “Mrs. Carter May” Have Deeper Meaning

Using her married name rather than her own name could have other shades of meaning for Beyonce and Jay-Z, as well.

On the poster promoting her Mrs. Carter Show world tour, Beyonce poses in a regal costume looking like a modern-day Queen Marie Antoinette, only much more risque.

The regal theme may be an acknowledgement Beyonce’s nickname, “Queen B.” Or it could be symbolic of the fact that Beyonce and Jay-Z are often referred to as the “King and Queen of Hip-Hop.” It could also be in keeping with the theme of husband Jay-Z’s 2012 album “Watch the Throne.”

The “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour" will kick off April 15 in Belgrade, Serbia. The European leg of the tour will wrap up May 29 in Stockholm, Sweden.

The tour's North American schedule will begin in Los Angeles on June 28.

It’s no coincidence that the final stop on the North American schedule is the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, which happens to be the childhood home of Mr. Carter, Beyonce’s hubby Jay-Z.

The Detroit Free Press of Feb. 5 reports that tickets for Beyonce’s Mrs. Carter Show have already gone on sale, and are selling at a rapid pace.
