The couples’ relationship between Michelle and President Barack Obama and Beyoncé and Jay-Z dates back to President Obama's first inauguration according to a Newsday report today, Jan. 21, 2013. She has been a strong supporter of the president and he has commended her for being a role model to his daughters. Today, Beyoncé stunned as she sang the "Star Spangled Banner." Beyoncé and Jay-Z reportedly raised an estimated $4 million for the campaign and at the event “the president even cracked a joke at his host’s expense: ‘Jay knows what my life is like,’ he quipped. ‘We both have daughters, and our wives are more popular than we are.’”

On the night of Obama’s 2009 inauguration, Beyoncé performed Etta James’ “At Last” at the Neighborhood Ball, where Barack and Michelle Obama shared their first public dance as president and first lady. Both Beyoncé and Michelle Obama are devoted to their daughters. In recent interviews the First Lady reiterated that although she will take on causes and work on policy initiatives, her devotion is to her family first.

News reports that an estimated 1 million people attended the inaugural address in person. In 2009, President Obama's first inauguration was set at 1.8 million, the highest number since Lyndon Johnson in 1965 with 1.2 million.
