Bexar County Games to offer youth competition at new facilities

Bexar County and San Antonio Sports will co-host the 2013 Bexar County Games, a youth sports competition taking place in new county venues built with the extension fo the visitor tax.

County Commissioners approved an agreement with the nonprofit amateur athletics organization San Antonio Sports to manage the games. Competitions will be held in basketball, swimming, soccer and track & field. San Antonio Parks & Recreation will also support the games.

The Bexar County Games are designed to offer affordable access to sport competitions while showcasing the new amateur sports facilities funded by $80 million approved by voters in the Bexar County 2008 venue tax extension.

“These new facilities are beautiful and help level the playing field with what other Texas communities offer,” said County Judge Nelson Wolff. “Children living in every quadrant of the county can participate. Facilities and entry fees won’t be a barrier to participation.”

The games will provide an affordable way for local youth to participate in athletic competitions and to qualify for the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation State Games of Texas when eligible. The federation annually hosts winter and summer games that draw thousands of amateur and recreational competitors from all over the state.

“Our focus is to develop healthy kids, provide places to play and deliver events that impact. This is one more way that local youth can experience the transformational power of sport,” said Russ Bookbinder, President and CEO, San Antonio Sports. “It is our hope that thousands of children will have fun competing at these wonderful venues, and be inspired to live active, healthy lives.”

“Not only are youth sports a valuable way to keep our children healthy and in shape, but they offer invaluable life skills, such as teamwork, fairness and dedication as they learn value in themselves and others,” says April Ancira, vice president, Ancira Enterprises. “I couldn’t imagine a better way to build a stronger community.”
