Beware the frozen ground

The current weather is not only unusual for the Utica/Rome area of upstate NY but can be dangerous for your animals.

Currently the surface ground is thawed, but there is frozen ground underneath. This makes for dangerous footing for dogs and horses who are running and enjoying the warm temperatures. As they run, it is easy to slip and slide. Falling hard on the frozen ground can lead to pulled muscles, torn tendons and even broken bones.

Luckily, there are good local options for rehabilitation if your dog or horse does get injured. Village Veterinary Hospital in Canastota has a canine rehabilitation department. Along with laser, acupuncture and customized exercise plans, they now also have an underwater treadmill. Recently, veterinary technicians were at the North American Veterinary Conference in Orlando, FL taking canine rehabilitation courses to be on top of the latest techniques.

Another great local facility is the Animal Performance and Therapy Center in Genoa. Started by Lin McGonagle MSPT LVT, this facility also offers an underwater treadmill as well as an exercise pool for swimming dogs. Lin works with board certified veterinary surgeon, Susan Yanoff, DVM. These two work together to develop a customized plan to restore your dog to as close as possible to his former working ability.
