At some point in our lives, we’ve all encountered these same scenarios: you’re an artist and you went to the movies with your film friends. You didn’t like the movie much, but there were some scenes with certain artistic elements in it that really inspired you. Or, perhaps you are a filmmaker wandering through an art gallery. The artwork in-and-of itself just isn’t doing it for you, but the elements are astounding. The medium is invigorating or the depictions are characters you’ve been struggling to visualize for a film. This is what the Between Scenes Gallery Exhibition is all about; celebrating the artists between the scenes. Between Scenes takes place this Wednesday, April 2nd at 7pm. The exhibition is held at The Icehouse Phoenix 429 West Jackson street in downtown Phoenix. Admission is free.
Celebrating its third year, Between Scenes presents the artists between the scenes, the creative craftspeople that provide the fusion of fantasy and film. The sound designers that give breadth and depth to a somber voice, the costume designers that take everyday clothing and transform it into instant identities, simply and cleverly teleporting viewers through time and space. The set designers that turn a pile of timber and junk into a medieval castle, a spaceship, or a terrifying dystopian landscape.
Curated by local set photographer, Sara Nevels, Between Scenes aims to recognize artists within the Phoenix Film Industry through an annual art exhibition, highlighting the often undervalued work being done behind the scenes. No films are shown during the event, rather the artists are encouraged to use their talents to construct art installations that creatively illustrate what they can do without the confines of a script. In turn, this unique art exhibition helps educate viewers, both film enthusiasts and casual movie-goers alike, on the truths behind filmmaking, and the benefits of having a thriving film community here in Phoenix.
"This is our 3rd year supporting artists that work behind the scenes, and so far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. With so many festivals and other film related events focusing on films and above the line professionals, there is clearly a strong need for an event such as ours. A film is compromised of many different elements, and this show dissects those elements, allowing the viewer to appreciate each one individually" says curator Sara Nevels.
