Between 'Archer' and 'Mad Love', Judy Greer pulls double duty this season

Who would consider Judy Greer, bonafide movie and TV star matronly? Well, thankfully not CBS! Though the chameleon comedic actress shared with LA TV Insider Examiner that some of her recent film roles (ones that will be released sporadically over the next year or so) have been more subdued, straight-laced, and yes, matronly, her newest television show is one in which she gets to shine in all of her quirky, biting glory. And isn’t that how so many of us came to know and love her anyway?

In CBS’ sitcom premiering later this month, Mad Love, Greer is Connie Grabowski, a woman who she admitted was “a little too easy to tap into” when it came to that snarky side. She is a nanny by trade and best friend to “stars in their eyes” romantic Kate (Sarah Chalke), who in the first episode meets her soulmate Ben (Jason Biggs) and sticks Connie with his scruffy, acerbic best friend of his own, Larry (Tyler Labine). While Connie and Larry have a “hate and first sight” kind of attraction, Greer shared that soon feelings may start to change.

“Larry and Connie have a great banter,” she said. “We can’t stand hanging out together, and yet we’re always hanging out together…”

But of course! After all, the most interest love stories are the ones you might not expect!

Besides, Labine may have had a hand in helping Greer get cast, so it only makes sense that their natural friendship bleed over on-screen.

“I really liked him a ton…He and I had drinks together just before I got cast in the show,” she told us. “I wanted to have drinks with him so he’d go back to Matt Tarses, who created the show, and tell him that I was awesome and he should cast me.”

We think it worked!

Connie is also a bit of a departure, personality-wise, from Greer’s other starring TV role, as Cheryl-or-Carol on FX’ animated spy series, Archer. But she won’t have to get too far away from her co-stars, as Chris Parnell (Archer’s Cyril Figgis) will guest star for a few episode arc on Mad Love as a love interest for Connie.

“I don’t really know,” Greer laughed when we asked her how she manages to juggle oh, so many jobs.

But it probably helps that Archer is something she can record in a booth in any city-- whether it’s Los Angeles where Mad Love films or somewhere across the country or in Canada, where some of her film work takes her.

Regardless of whether Greer in all of her glory, or just her voice, is in front of the camera, she shared that she likes taking on roles that showcase a bit of spunk.

"Everything crossed, this will be on the air for a really long time [so I can do that],” she said, literally crossing her fingers. “So please watch it!”

Mad Love premieres on February 14th at 8:30pm on CBS but you can catch Greer in Archer right now on FX, Thursdays at 10pm.
