Hollywood icon Betty White and drug lord Walter White from AMC’s “Breaking Bad” have something in common. They both received top entertainment honors from Guinness World Records and will be featured in the 2014 edition. In a press release dated Sept. 5, the publisher stated that both were named because they achieved unparalleled success this year.
Betty White, who currently stars in “Hot in Cleveland” and “Off Their Rockers,” earned the Guinness World Record for “Longest Career for an Entertainer (Female)." Betty’s career has spanned 74 years and she shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The queen of the small screen made her debut in 1939. Her most popular TV roles include work on “The Carol Burnett Show,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and “The Golden Girls.” The “Huff Post” recently called Betty White “one of the funniest women ever to be on television,” which is a true testament to her long and respected career.
White, who is now 91 and working harder than ever, said of the Guinness World Record, “I was astounded! It’s such an honor. The book has always been fascinating to me. I can’t believe I’m associated with it.” She also advised aspiring actors to do their homework and take time to appreciate their profession. “It’s a privilege to do what we do,” she added.
AMC’s huge hit “Breaking Bad” also made the "2014 Guinness World Records" book. It received the honor of “Highest-Rated TV Series" because it garnered a metascore of 99 out of 100 on MetaCritic.com. Now in its fifth and final season, the hit show starring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul has captivated fans and critics alike by following Walter White’s transformation from decent family man to criminal mastermind.
On Sept. 4, “Entertainment Weekly” announced that “Breaking Bad” would be featured on the cover of its Sept. 13 edition. Concerning the highly anticipated finale, creator Vince Gilligan told “EW,” “There are going to be a lot of holy s----! moments. Buckle up because we’re not going out with a whimper.”
“Guinness World Records 2014” hits store shelves nationwide on Sept. 12. In addition to Betty White and “Breaking Bad,” the new book also includes Taylor Swift (First Solo Female with Two Million-Selling Weeks on the U.S. Albums Chart), Justin Bieber (First Musician with a Music Channel Viewed Three Billion Times), One Direction (Most Twitter Followers for a Pop Group), and many more.
