Betting on Michael Vick

Vick runs onto the field for the first time as an Eagle

Michael Vick’s return to the NFL has become the season’s biggest story. The Philadelphia Eagles have already placed the largest wager on the convicted dogfighter by giving him a contract potentially worth millions and risked lucrative sponsorship deals by signing him, but with the start of the season only days away, the average fan also has the chance wager on Vick’s performance. Several large online sportsbooks currently offer a number of different proposition, or “prop,” bets on the controversial quarterback. Industry giant, Bodog, lists their Vick props near the top of their player prop directory which indicates the extreme popularity of these wagers. Here is a look at their large number of offerings and predictions:

Vick Prop Bets on Bodog (Odds)
Will Vick start at QB for the Eagles during the 2009 season? No (10/23)
Will Vick be an Eagle at the start of the 2010 season? Yes (20/43)
Will Vick pass or rush for more TDs in the 2009 season? Rush (2/3)
Will Vick pass or rush for more yards in the 2009 season? Rush (2/3)
Will Vick total over or under 200 passing yards for the 2009 season? Over (11/13)
Will Vick total over or under 250 rushing yards for the 2009 season? Even (20/23)
Will Vick first enter a game as a QB, RB, or WR? RB (20/33)
Will Vick record a passing, rushing, or receiving TD first? Rushing (10/17)
Will Vick’s first pass be a completion or incompletion/interception? Completion (2/3)

The prop bets offered by Bodog indicate that gamblers expect Vick to have a mixed first season back in the NFL. He is not expected to start at quarterback during the 2009 season. These lines also show that the experts expect Vick to be more effective as a rusher than a passer this season. However, they also predict that Vick’s performance this year will be strong enough to earn him a spot on the Eagles 2010 roster which is a sign of confidence and indication of their faith in his future potential.
