I want to direct your attention today to a website for motorcyclists that offers a lot of good safety information. Better Motorcycling is the creation of Ruben Torres, who is described as "a 21 year veteran police officer, a crash specialist and a member of the motor unit." With the subtitle for the site of "Safety is a Choice," his efforts have this clearly stated goal: Since most riders do not have an articulable system of riding, the posts presented are submitted with the hope that riders would begin to educate themselves and seek training.
Let's look at a few of Ruben's posts to get an idea of what he presents.
Too Fast Too Furious is the most current one, and it shows a video of a motorcyclist crashing into a car at an intersection. While you can find any number of videos out there with similar content, Ruben goes much further. He analyzes the situation, pointing out the issues the rider should have paid attention to, with the presumed result that the accident would not have occurred. The intent is to help other riders learn to identify similar signs and respond appropriately.
An earlier post is Top 5 Mistakes: Motorcycles, which is part of a series of Top 5 Mistakes posts, also addressing cars, teen drivers, and pedestrians.
Ruben's top 5 motorcycle mistakes include:
- Failing to detect hazards
- Over-braking the rear
- Curve negotiation
- Steering
- Failing to train
Each section, of course, discusses the mistake.
What may be of particular interest to many readers is a new section on the website entitled Letters to Brandon. As Ruben explains, "I will be writing this as if I were writing letters and giving instruction to one person, let’s call him Brandon. Brandon is a young new rider and is raring to go. He saved his money and bought his first ride. He is full with the wonders of motorcycling and the excitement of it all."
The letters to Brandon, to date, include:
It's all good, solid advice for any new rider, and very much along the lines of the guest post recently featured here from Jordan Roberson, Guest post: What to do when your teen wants a motorcycle.
I could go on and on, but hey, if you're interested, go to the source. Ruben is a good one.

Comments
Not only new riders but I see experienced riders in need of more instruction.
