Better Than Ezra fans anticipate the release of SilentJ's latest single Off The Hook

The Examiner Presents: Sounds of the Charm City underground

Sounds of the Charm City underground was created to give underground artists, in the Baltimore area or touring the Baltimore area, a chance to be heard. Every week we will profile a variety of different artists. We do not review music, however the forum is open for listeners to critique and offer feedback. A successful music career starts with good music and a dedicated fan base. If you love it, tell us. If it’s not your thing, try to be as constructive as possible in your feedback. A good artist will appreciate pointers on ways to continue the development of their craft.

If you enjoy the sounds of Better Than Ezra, Third Eye Blind, Live, and Gin Blossoms, be sure to check out SilentJ!  Based out of Ellicott City Maryland, SilentJ is making some good noise and getting a ton of exposure. With a fan base that continues to grow with each and every performance, there is no surprise that this band advanced onto the second round of DC’s Fox Rocks contest. Through increased exposure, they aim to build and maintain lasting relationships within the regional music network as well as form relationships with those offering opportunities for exposure in other major cities. As of September 10th 2009, SilentJ is proud to announce the release of their latest single, Off the Hook.

When it comes to the Baltimore underground music scene, lead guitarist Jeff Daro describes it as “Fertile, but there are a significant number of musical acts jockeying for the same exposure creating a great deal of competition.” Like many up and coming artist in the Baltimore area, Jeff would like to see more bars and venues offer live music along with a built in crowd. Some may view this request as demanding, but when you look at places like Sixth Street in Austin Texas, the idea is quite common.

Band Name: SilentJ

Biography: SilentJ began in the 2007 with two guitars in a backyard in Ellicott City, MD. We soon added a third guitar that quickly transformed into a bass. Months later, another meeting on the deck turned up a drummer from down the street. Days later, SilentJ was born in a basement jam session. Since then, SilentJ has composed some 20+ original pieces and has selected a set of cover tunes that collectively offers a musical library that distinguishes SilentJ from the Baltimore live music scene. People ask how the band was formed, and we can only answer, organically. It just happened.
