The Boston Red Sox have forced themselves into the championship conversation, winning their last six in a row, going 8-1 on their just-completed home stand, and climbing into a virtual tie with the Tampa Bay Rays just one game back of the division-leading New York Yankees.
And they said it couldn’t be done.
OK, so I said it couldn’t be done.
What’s truly remarkable about the club’s recent run is that its outfield is patchwork and its starting pitching is uncertain (Messrs. Buchholz and Lester notwithstanding). But the players are performing with grit, and the way they pick each other up gives great credence to this observer’s long-held opinion that clubhouse chemistry does matter, and can separate one team from the others when things are on the line.
As they have been for the Red Sox all season long.
Can’t wait to see what happens next!
