You don't always have to be the first to discover a designer or style to be on trend. Sometimes, being the last person to 'get' what's going on can put you ahead of the game. You might feel that you need to rush out and create an entirely new wardrobe every season, or look you’ll look outdated. Not so. Here are a few tips on how to lag behind and end up in front of the crowd.
One great way to buy into a trend, but not break your bank account is resale shops. Places like Buffalo Exchange and Beacon's Closet can feature gently worn clothing, sometimes from top designers, that have the characteristics of new trends. Look carefully and bring pages from magazines with you.
Clearance sales are another great tactic. Supposedly, this is merchandise that no one wanted. But this merchandise was rushed into production and put in stores to be ahead of the crowd. While the items may be months old, the trend is just breaking because you're moving into the relevant season. Spring clothes that were being sold in winter are now more affordable because stores need to make way for the summer clothes. You, the late adopter, can come strolling in and pick the best of what's there, yet again adding only a few key pieces to update your look.
Most important tip: spend on classics. A perfect white shirt to complement the newest skirt shape, at least one pair of perfectly cut jeans, a camel hair coat, black cashmere turtleneck, and so on. These are the items that you will use to create a base to layer the newer, trendier items on. That's the key to being elegant, not trendy or fashion obsessed. Buy quality first, and adopt trends last.
