On the first day of January a law was passed in Los Angeles banning the distribution of free plastic bags used to load up groceries at all markets. This new ruling is in effect and many residents in the city who shop for food in the city of Los Angeles don’t have the same enthusiasm as Bette Midler.
Bette is excited about the ban of plastic bags used at grocery stores. It seems she thinks a greener way of carrying groceries in and out of the stores is a much better way to go. According to Bette Midler’s official Twitter account, her post on Jan. 1 has her fans and friends shaking their heads.
She told everyone that: “Happy Plastic Free New Year 2014! Looking ahead w/excitement & optimism; together, we're moving the dial. LA ban on plastic bags.”
This new law and ban according to CBS Los Angeles on plastic bags will affect nearly 3.8 million residents in Los Angeles. Currently this same law is already in effect in the cities of West Hollywood, Culver City, Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Malibu, Santa Monica, Glendale and Pasadena.
All grocery retailers could be fined if they choose to ignore and violate the new ruling. Fines are set at $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second offense and $500 for a third offense.
Consumers are given options for having their groceries bagged. They can either purchase brown paper bags for ten cents apiece or purchase and bring in their own cloth, fabric or insulated bags. This is a greener approach and will keep America cleaner with less this plastic bags to manufacture and recycle throughout the years ahead.
Do you agree with Bette Midler?
