Strumming her hot pink guitar and holding a sign that read “BRIDAL SALON [heart symbol] BETSEY JOHNSON” the black and hot-pink lips clad Betsey Johnson transformed an all white window display in full view of passersby during her Betsey Johnson 2013 Dress Collection Launch at Macy's Herald Square.
Behind the bright and bubbly 70-year-old designer was a hot pink backdrop with a photograph and dialogue bubble saying “Hey! Come watch me doin my thing!” xox Betsey.”
Yet another red heart-decorated hand-written sign from Johnson’s grandchildren read, “gramas in Macys! Xox Layla + Ella.”
Granddaughter Ella, 5, was reportedly also attending the launch and doodled on the floors with lipstick to add a whimsical touch to the display.
As for the much-anticipated Betsey Johnson 2013 Dress Collection, the window display that initially had several bald black bra and g-string-wearing mannequins with enormous lips was transformed into mannequins wearing several very feminine dresses including a black and white striped number with a wrap bodice, a strapless floral dress, a strapless black chiffon mini and a halter necked coral pink high-low frock.
Strewn about the feet of the mannequins were several champagne bottles with pictures of Betsey Johnson as labels and empty champagne flutes just waiting to be filled with bubbly...
Her press release proclaimed: “I'm back!!! Doing my dress thing. Pretty and punk, sweet and sexy, always rock n' roll.”
The dresses range from $99 to $249 and include colorful animal prints, lace, peplum touches at the hips and spotted chiffon, appealing to a variety of tastes and age brackets.
If the throngs of people outside taking pictures while Betsey worked away were any indication, the live window-dressing session during the dress launch was a complete success!
