Bethlehem Steel Works property developer seeking a craft brew operation

Bethworks Retail LLC, commercial developer for the former Bethlehem Steel Works property, is attempting to get Stone Brewing Co., the nation’s 10th largest craft brewer, to consider the site as a possible location for its East coast brewery operations.

Bethworks is offering the Bessemer building, the place where steel from the area was first produced in 1873, as a great location for Stone’s joint brew operation--a brewery with a brew pub/restaurant, making it a combination of distribution center and retail space.

Stone Brewing visited and reviewed hundreds of location, and is rumored to have narrowed the list down to ten finalist cities.

With no official statement given, or any locations ruled out, the Stone Brewing company has declined to comment on exactly what cities are actually still in the running.

It is known that the city of Allentown submitted an application, which would see Stone would partner with Ruckus Brewing and help develop the former Neuweiler Brewery site in Allentown.

Shipyard Brewing Co., based in Maine and the 14th largest craft brewer, toured the Bethlehem Steel site earlier this year and also is considering the area as a possible location for some type of brew operations.

Shipyard, which operates Sea Dog Brewing and other brew pubs in Maine and Florida, is not yet sure what type of brewing operation they would put on the site, but they are looking to expand their operations.

Officials at the Lehigh Valley Economic and Development Corporation (LVEDC) believe that the Steel Works developers are correct in attempting to bring some sort of brew operations to the site.

With the consumption of craft beer rising, while other beer sales are declining, and the site being close to Interstate 78, the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, and the ArtsQuest SteelStacks entertainment facility, this makes the former Bethlehem Steel Works property an ideal location for some sort of retail concept brewery.
