Beth Stovall crowned Miss North Carolina

Beth Stovall will represent North Carolina will represent her state this September at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. She was crowned Miss North Carolina on Saturday following competition in Raleigh.

Stovall entered the pageant as Miss Greater Sampson County. She won preliminary competitions in both the swimsuit and talent competitions.

She was born and raised in Goldsboro, and was Miss Goldsboro 2013. She is a student at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she is studying for a bachelor’s degree in music.

Her ambition is to be a professional performer. She also wants to be a vocal coach at the collegiate level.

Her pageant platform is “Inspiration: Art.” She is an advocate of encouraging children to express themselves through activities in the arts. Her pageant talent is as a vocalist.

Stovall credits the Miss America program with helping her become a "dimensional, self-confident, caring, and capable young woman."

If Stovall is crowned Miss North Carolina, she will become the second titleholder in her state to wear the national crown. The first was Miss North Carolina 1961 Maria Fletcher.

The last North Carolinian to finish in the top five at the national pageant was Miss North Carolina 2007 Jessica Jacobs. She was fourth runner-up.

A new Miss America is scheduled to be crowned on Sept. 14. The final night of pageantry will be broadcast live on the East Coast by the ABC television network, with a taped-delayed broadcast for the West Coast.

Also on Saturday, Karson Fair was crowned Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen. She will represent her state at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant in Orlando, Florida.

The teen pageant is the younger-sister competition in the Miss America Organization. Contestants are ages 13-17 years.

If Fair wins the national pageant, she will become the first North Carolina contestant to wear the national crown. The highest-placing contestant is Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen 2009 Katherine Puryear, who was third runner-up.
