I recently attended the taping of BET's Celebration of Gospel and let me tell you this is a show you definitely want to watch when it airs on April 6th. (Check your local listings for times and stations)
Taraji P Henson took over as host for the first time for the show and did an excellent job.
The program opened up with Deitrick Haddon and his mass choir performing a power-packed song "We Serve a Mighty God" and as comedian Ron G said it was a "Gospel Rhythm Nation" performance. It really started the show off right.
Next up was Tamela Mann who moved the crowd with her version of the Mercy Me classic "I Can Only Imagine." The performance was touching and simply beautiful.
The show was full of various collaborations of secular and Gospel artists and allowed the audience to experience a unique praise and worship performance from each group. Sisters With Voices or SWV performed with the Rance Allen Group, Chante Moore and Vashawn Mitchell performed together and Lalah Hathaway and Zacardi Cortez did a beautiful rendition of his hit song "1 on 1."
One of the greatest duets of the night was the one with India Arie and Jonathan McReynolds. Both played their guitars and sung an acoustic version of his hit "No Gray" and it was simply beautiful.
Uncle Charlie Wilson came out did a Patti LaBelle move, kicked off his shoes and took the entire audience to church COGIC style. Yes Uncle Charlie was raised in the Church of God in Christ and his performance left no doubt about that fact.
Finally there was a great tribute to the legendary Richard Smallwood that is not to be missed.
There are so many great moments of The Celebration of Gospel that I could write all night about it, but I will just say watch it for yourself and let me know what you think. I know if you catch the show you won't be disappointed.
