Don't want to give these sugary treats? Here are some other options (photo from Terren in VA @ flickr).
- A running skirt. This is the newest craze. Gone are the days of the boring running shorts. These skirts come in a myriad of designs and colors. Check out www.sportskirts.com or www.runningskirts.com for some of the latest fashions. Don't want to order on line? Fleet Feet in Boulder is a good local option.
- A piece of jewelry. Calm down, we're not talking expensive diamonds and pearls here. These days you can find unique and affordable bracelets, necklaces and key chains that scream, "I am a runner." Favorites include 26.2 or 13.1 charms, bracelets with a runner girl charm or a key chain that says, "Runner girl." Look for these at www.finishlinecharms.com.
- A simple t-shirt. Favorite local slogans include "Sea Level is for Sissies" and "Got Altitude?" Some of these styles can be found at the Boulder Running Company. You can also find sassy tees that say such things as "I Run for Wine" and "I Run Like a Girl, Just Try to Keep Up." Try www.gypsyrunner.com or www.cafepress.com for these styles.
- A running hat. Every girl needs a running hat, especially for those bad hair days. Find a lightweight hat that is machine washable (all that sweat builds up after awhile). You can find great hat options at Solepepper Sports, the Boulder Running Company, Fleet Feet or even Dick's Sporting Goods.
- A Nike Plus. If you want to go big this Valentine's Day, surprise your girl with a Nike Plus. This is a much more affordable option than a Garmin GPS and retails for only $59.99. According to Wikipedia, The Nike+iPod Sports Kit is a device which measures and records the distance and pace of a walk or run. The Nike+iPod consists of a small accelerometer[1] attached to or embedded in a shoe, which communicates with either the Nike+ Sportband, a receiver plugged into an iPod Nano, or directly with an iPod Touch 2nd Generation or iPhone 3GS. If using the iPod or the iPhone 3GS, iTunes software can be used to view the walk or run history. These slick devices are available in a myriad of fun colors including pink, red, yellow or blue. These can be found at Dick's Sporting Goods, www.amazon.com and anywhere that Nike merchandise is sold.
If you haven't found the perfect gift for your wife or girlfriend yet, don't despair. You still have time to order online (overnight delivery), or run out to your local running store. The runner in your life will thank you for it and will appreciate that you are encouraging her to do something she loves.
