Best pre-workout snacks

Eating a ton of food before you hit the gym is something I recommend. It can be hard enough to workout, so don’t make it any harder for yourself by stuffing your face before you get your gym clothes on. I’m not saying you shouldn't eat anything before you work out – you need energy to burn energy – but some foods are just better than others. Here are some easy snack ideas that will get your energy up and your body moving so you can make the most of your workouts. It's all about balance.

1. Low fat yogurt with banana - Yogurt will give you the protein you need and fruit has all the good carbs. This is the perfect combo and requires hardly any effort to make. Just open and peel.

2. String cheese and a couple crackers - If you're not into the fruity snacks, cheese and crackers are still easily digestible and won't weigh you or your workout down.

3. Hard boiled eggs - Eggs are a good source of lean protein, and are even better if you skip the yolk. Pop two of these babies in your mouth about an hour before you hit the weights and you'll be building muscle in no time.

4. Energy/protein bar (or shake) - I like vanilla with peanut butter and banana.

As long as you keep it small and balance your carbs and protein right, these pre-workout snacks will keep you energized from the moment you walk into the gym until you leave a sweaty mess. And if you're anything like me, you'll still have energy afterwards.

All of things you need for these pre-workout snacks can be purchased at any of the local grocery store, but Valli Produce and Fiesta Market seam to always have the best bananas.
