Portland is a very friendly city in many ways. We’re traveler friendly, bike friendly, lesbian-gay friendly, tree friendly, green friendly, dog friendly and panhandle friendly, among other friendly ways. Today the important way is the dog friendly way.

Portland has many parks and there are 51 of them that either allow dogs to run freely and play at certain times or they are dedicated dog parks, meaning your dog can run free and play all the time. It’s important to have these parks because dogs are active animals who love to play, wrestle and chase, and exercise is important for their good health and happiness. Especially if they’ve been cooped up all day in the house waiting for their people to come home from work. They are all wound up and excited to see you as if they’ve been storing it up all day. And, they have.

Downtown Portland is where I see the most dogs, besides the ones in my own neighborhood, at least. All kinds of dogs, from a Bull Mastif walking his owner to a Tea Cup Chihuahua being carried along the streets of town, the nice weather in Portland brings out as many dogs as people, just about.

Below you’ll find an alphabetical list of the dog friendly parks in Portland, and under that is a slide show of the dogs I’ve seen out in Portland recently. Did you take your dog downtown, maybe there’s a picture of you!
