Going downtown to see what’s up today, we discovered the amount of artwork along SW 5th and 6th Avenues. There seemed to be more than I’d noticed before, so we began taking pictures of it all. There was so much, we did just 6th Avenue first, and we’ll do 5th Avenue on another day.
The artwork is done by so many people, we saw only 1 or 2 names mentioned twice. I wonder how these people ended up getting their artwork on the city’s streets? Each one has a plaque that tells you the piece’s name, the artist and the year it was completed.
I remember the sculpture of the lady on 6th was placed when Bud Clark was mayor of Portland. I remember the big stink about it, too, because she looks like she might be in early gestation. I didn’t even think that when I saw it for the first time, but some people will pick at anything to complain about.
Rain or shine, these pieces will still be there. If you have a little time, take a walk down 5th and 6th Avenues, there’s the artworks, there’s amazing architecture, art in the windows of empty building, restaurants and all kinds of things to look at. Plus, on Mondays there’s free entertainment and the Wii truck in the Transit Mall.
Each photo below has the name of the work and the details
