In Seattle, there is always something for a happy photographer to shoot. But, the best place to take great photos depends upon the time of year and the weather. Here are four go-to parks in Seattle:
Great skyline photos - Kerry Park
Tiny Kerry Park is a small grassy area, on Queen Anne Hill, where professional photographers get that beautiful photograph of the Space Needle, against the downtown Seattle skyline, with Mount Rainier in the distance. It is also a good point from which to shoot an evening, or dusky, scene of the city.
Mount Rainier is only visible on the clearest of days, and a telephoto lens is often used to bring the mountain forward. The photo above was, most likely, taken from Kerry Park.
Beautiful lake views - Gas Works Park
At Gas Works, it’s easy to get a shot of the entire Seattle skyline, including the Space Needle, with Lake Union in the foreground. The striking juxtaposition of wild water and windy sailboats, against the orderly man-made towers, is an iconic view which captures the essence of Seattle.
Cool action shots - Green Lake Park
This is the best place for photographing active joggers, rollerbladers, and other high movement sports. Green Lake is Seattle's toned down version of Venice Beach, California, and though more normal in tone, there are still some great shots of bikinis and hard bodies in summer. The lake itself is quite accessible and conveys a different mood in almost every photograph.
Best place for nature in Seattle - Washington Park Arboretum
The Arboretum is the best place to photograph natural changes of the seasons. In spring, the cherry blossoms are delicate and swirling. In summer, it’s a good place to find families picnicking or playing Frisbee with their dogs. In autumn, the trees change color on different days, so every shot can have varying degrees of oranges and reds, layered against an evergreen background. And, in winter, the bare trees form beautiful patterns against the sky.
All photos, which are not credited to Wikipedia.org, were snapped very quickly by the author, with a little point and shoot digital camera. The photo of Mount Rainier was taken from the shotgun seat of a bumpy Tahoe truck while the author's husband sped across a freeway. Imagine what a photographer with a decent camera, and a little time, could do.
There is no better city than Seattle, in America, for photographers. Even a little point and shoot camera will yield great photos.
