Best of Spokane Arts and Crafts: Kids Crafts Classes

There are a few excellent places here in Spokane to take your children for crafts classes. Take advantage of the resources available to you and your kids. These places have consistent programs for kids throughout the year. Some are free of charge and others charge a nominal fee.

Spokane Parks Department/ Corbin Art Center

Corbin Art Center is a converted mansion at the base of South Hill that now offers arts and crafts programs through the Spokane Parks Department. They have classes for preschool aged kids and toddlers, elementary and middle school aged kids, teens, adults and seniors. Their class length offerings range from one or two day workshops, multi-week classes, summer camps, and no-school day camps. Kids camps and classes cover fine arts, theater, crafts, history and adventure, as well as fostering creativity, exploration imagination and making a mess. Their programs for adults include drawing, painting, creative writing, fiber, gardening and landscape, photography, sewing, candles, crochet rugs, jewelry, soaps cooking and baking. Classes cycle seasonally and the cost is reasonable. Another enjoyed feature at the Corbin Art Center are their birthday parties and meeting rentals.

Spokane County Libraries

Throughout Spokane County, the local library branches offer a variety of free kids and family workshops. The Preschool and Toddler story times always include a craft or drawing activity. The Kids Explore and Discover Clubs, for kids Kindergarten to grade 5, have different activities and themes, ranging from scientists to artists, but always use imagination and creativity. Tween Club, for grades 4 to 6, have play games, snack as well as make things. Events are always changing through the seasons and as kids are on school break, so remember to keep checking in on this great resource.

Mobius Children's Museum

The Children's Museum downtown has a continuous cycle of workshops, classes, events and day-to-day programming. There are no-school day offerings as well as birthday parties. The Children's Museum has programs for babies, toddlers and young school aged kids. Their counterpart, the Mobius Science Museum, is focused on science and older children.

Auntie's Bookstore

This independent, downtown bookstore not only has a creatively decorated kids book section that alone is worth visiting, but they have regular, free story times that are accompanied with a craft. Auntie Violet herself often reads. This bookstore and the Liberty Building, where the store is located, is often an active destination during First Friday's that would be appropriate for bringing children to expose them to fine arts and live music.
