Fall means apples and apples = pie so if you're looking to enjoy some fresh-baked apple pie but don't want to get out the rolling pin and make your own, then it's time to explore The Blue Mountains Apple Pie Trail. Located just 2 1/2 hours north of Toronto, the municipalities of Meaford, Thornbury and Blue Mountain are located within one of the top apple growing regions in Canada. With 14 orchards spread across 2500 acres, it's prime apple-growing country as the trees are protected from frost by the towering Niagara Escarpment and the warm lake air from Georgian Bay.
Here's the best of what to see and do:
1) Hit the Apple Pie Trail: Your free map will guide you to stops to sample apple pies, jams, cider and more. Try an apple-beet salad at Café Chartreuse.
2) Sample Red Prince Apple Pie: Visit Thornbury Bakery Cafe (519 599-3311), 12 Bruce St. S. and get your pie to go and and enjoy a picnic on the waterfront at Meaford.
3) Enjoy a Fall Festival. Coming up soon is A Taste of Blue on September 11, 2011 in Blue Mountain Village. A tasting kit (yummy samples from area restaurants, apple cider and more) costs are just $20 and the live music, fashion shows and cooking demos are free.
4) Go Market Shopping: Pick up some fresh apples at the Collingwood Downtown Farmers Market ( open Saturdays until Thanksgiving Weekend.)
5) Chill out like a local: Head to The Dam Pub Restaurant 53 Bruce St. S. to try Peeler, a premium light apple cider crafted from 100% fresh-pressed apples. This crisp and refreshing cider by the Thornbury Village Cidery is not available in stores and the Dam Pub Restaurant is one of the few spots where you can sample it.
