Best of natural hair year in review

As 2012 quickly approaches many are reflecting on the best and worst of 2011.

The end of the War in Iraq, the killings of Osama bin Laden and Muammar Gadhafi, the Eurozone crisis and Occupy Wallstreet, Jared Lee Loughner shooting in Arizona, and the death of Kim Jong il.

The deaths of Steve Jobs, Elizabeth Taylor, Bubba Smith, Brent Darby, Nate Dogg, Amy Whinehouse, Patrice O' Neal, Randy Savage, Joe Fraizer, Heavy D, Nick Ashford and Gil Scott Heron.

'Winning' via Charlie Sheen, hats worn at Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding, Justin Bieber's hair on eBay, and Beyonce's baby announcement.

There were also several memorable 'natural hair' events in 2011.

The New York Times featured vloggers Maeling Tapp of Natural Chica and Kim Love of KimmayTube in its "Going Natural’ Requires Lots of Help" article.

Aevin Dugas was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for the World's Largest Afro.

Those infamous TSA pat-downs of natural hair wearers Laura Adiele, Timery Shante Nance and Isis Brantley.

Isis Brantley went on to host the first Natural Hair Parade and Festival in Dallas, Texas lead by Singer, Erykah Badu.

Natural hair wearer Esperanza Spalding won the Grammy for Best New Artist of the year.

Celebrity stylist Felicia Leatherwood performed two of the most talked about ‘big chops’ on Actress Kim Coles and Model Tomiko Fraser Hines.

Tomiko Fraser Hines was also featured in a Gain detergent commercial sporting her natural hair.

There were also other commercials and ad spots featuring natural hair wearers including Banana Republic, HomeGoods and Kmart.

MTV also announced a casting call for one of it's upcoming True Life.

The show producers are looking for young ladies between the age of 15 and 28 who are interested in sharing their transition to natural hair (see contact info below).

Although not started this year, in 2011 Target stores all around the country continued to expand their stock of natural hair products, including Taliah Waajid, Miss Jessie’s, CURLS, The Jane Carter Solution.

Founders of Miss Jessie’s Tito and Miko Branch were also named on Ebony Magazine’s Annual Power 100 List.
