Best of MARTA: Public Swimming Pools

There's nothing like a pool on a hot summer day.
There's nothing like a pool on a hot summer day.
Tibor Végh

It's summer, and it's hot. Besides the Coca-Cola Summer (Indoor) Film Festival, what are you doing to do? Go to the pool of course. Here are six you can easily get to on MARTA.

Piedmont Park Pool
Transit and Walking Directions
Recently renovated, the Piedmont Park pool has free swim hours on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., the pool is for pool pass holders only. On the weekend, pass holders get access from 10 a.m. to noon and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The remaining times are open to the public.

For easiest access to the pool, use the 14th Street park entrance closest to the Arts Center MARTA station.

Ebster Park Pool and Glenlake Pool
For twice the pool fun on the blue line, head to the Decatur station for the Ebster Park and Glenlake pool. Although smaller than the Piedmont Park pool, Ebster Park provides the perk of being closer to MARTA (and has a diving board). The pool is only open until 5 p.m. on weekdays and 6 p.m. on the weekends. The larger Glenlake pool is open later, but is a longer walk away.

For the Ebster Park pool, take the Swanton Way exit out of the Decatur MARTA station and walk a block to Commerce Drive and turn left. At the next intersection, turn right on Trinity Avenue and walk another two blocks. Take the Church Street exit out of the station and turn left on Church to reach Glenlake.

Candler Park Pool
Transit and Walking Directions
Also off the blue line is the pool at Candler Park. Free swim is on weekdays from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. -- score. Walking time is just under 15 minutes from the Candler Park MARTA station.

Grant Park Pool
Transit and Walking Directions
Located near Zoo Atlanta in historic Grant Park, this pool offers long lanes for laps and options for activities before or after your swim. Another bonus is adult hours from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Walking time to the pool is about 25 minutes from the King Memorial MARTA station, or bike for a shorter commute. The other option is to catch the neighborhood bus at the Five Points station.

Doraville Municipal Pool
Many people don't know that there's a swimming pool tucked away in walking distance of the Doraville MARTA station at the end of the gold line. The pool is closed on Mondays, and can be rented throughout week for private events and parties. From the station, turn right on New Peachtree Road then left on Park Avenue.

Washington Park Natatorium
For a swimming experience all year long, the indoor pool at Washington Park is only one of five natatoriums in Atlanta. However, the pool is closed on Fridays and Sundays, and on Saturdays the pool is only open in the morning. Otherwise, enjoy your dip in the pool until 8 p.m. on weekdays.

Take a blue or green line train to the Ashby MARTA station and turn right at street level. At the corner, make a quick left on Lena Street to reach the park.
