Sometimes Atlanta really is Hotlanta, and you really need to find a pool, ice cream, frozen yogurt or pop when the humidity becomes higher than the speed limit on the connector (which is only 55, by the way). And unlike those cars stuck on the interstate, at least if you're on MARTA, you can hop off the train during your commute for a cool treat and add a little adventure to your day.
So make the most of your freedom. Here are the destinations to put on your list when the temps get high. Just remember, no eating on buses or trains!
King of Pops
Atlanta's favorite pop stand, King of Pops serves homemade popsicles with fresh and unique ingredients. Their rainbow-colored umbrellas are now all over the city, making them easy to spot. View their website for the most up-to-date information on locations. Currently you can find a pop at Colony Square during lunchtime on Wednesdays (Arts Center MARTA station), on the Decatur Square above the Decatur MARTA station on Wednesday through Sunday afternoons/evenings and lunchtime Thursdays near the Midtown MARTA station at 12th Street and Peachtree Walk. Weekends at Centennial Olympic Park you can also get your fix, especially if you're in the area for an event or to see the sights. The Dome MARTA station is closest to the park, but you can also walk from Peachtree Center.
Yogurt Tap is located directly across from Decatur station's Church Street exit. Flavors rotate, and plenty of toppings will have you coming back to try different combinations.
Butter & Cream
Next to the station and across from Yogurt Tap you can get a scoop or two of homemade ice cream. You can also order sorbets and desserts made from scratch. Yum.
Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream
For fancy flavors, Decatur also has Jeni's on top of the Decatur MARTA station near the gazebo.
Dairy Queen (Peachtree Center Food Court)
You can find DQ and all its variety of cool treats in the food court directly above the Peachtree Center MARTA station. Follow the signs to Harris Street after exiting the train, then follow the signs to Peachtree Street East to enter directly into the food court.
Natural's Ice Cream, Yogurt and Smoothies
Also close to MARTA, Natural's is located inside the CNN Center food court, which is a short walk from the Dome MARTA station on the blue/green rail line. Follow the signs to Philips Arena after exiting the train, and at street level, keep right to walk around Philips Arena. The CNN Center is just down the street. Enter any door on the left.
The frozen yogurt spot in Midtown is Yogli Mogli on 5th Street. In Tech Square, the yogurt shop is almost equally distant between the North Avenue and Midtown MARTA stations. North Avenue is slightly closer. If exiting at that station, follow the signs pointing to the Fox Theatre/AT&T Center, which will take you through an indoor mall. Walk straight ahead after exiting the fare gates to reach 3rd Street. Turn left, then right on West Peachtree Street and left again on 5th Street.
An Atlanta classic, Zesto has fast food, shakes and ice cream. There's a location across from the Lindbergh Center MARTA station on Piedmont Road.
Häagen-Dazs and Pinkberry
Head to the Lenox Square food court to enjoy the many flavors of Haagan-Dazs ice cream and sorbet. Or if you prefer frozen yogurt, Pinkberry is also in the mall. For easiest access, take a gold line train to the Lenox MARTA station and follow the signs "To Mall" after exiting the train. At street level, turn left on East Paces Ferry. The road leads to a back entrance that leads directly into the mall food court.
For more frozen yogurt fun, Yogurberry offers organic treats near the Buckhead MARTA station in the Terminus building. Ride a red line train to Buckhead and exit on to Peachtree Road -- use the first stairwell out of the station and not the pedestrian tunnel or bridge. Turn right on Peachtree Road and walk just over two blocks. Make a right in between the Grand Hyatt hotel and Bricktops.
Dairy Queen (Perimeter Mall)
North of the city is another Dairy Queen in Perimeter Mall next to the Dunwoody MARTA station for all those commuters who use the red line or want to combine ice cream with shopping.
