2012 has been another year of rollercoaster reminiscence, super highs and super lows, rough in between, and excitement throughout. There was a special place for various artistic events and artists’ endeavors that happened in the DC area in 2012. Here are a few reminders and highlights:
Art & Sound-
Leading up to and surrounding the Valentine’s Day holiday, there were several ‘oldie but goodie’ concerts to attend that made for perfect presents.
As the summer months approached, the concert dates increased and the songs of soul could be heard in venues all over the DC Metropolitan area.
With fall turning the corner, Heineken returned to the city to host its annual Red Star Access tour (concert series), this time with comedian, Affion Crockett and rap star, B.O.B. as the headliner.
Art for a Purpose-
In an unfortunate occurrence this year, a young teen by the name of Trayvon Martin lost his life. The turnaround of happenings came when protests were organized across the country to bring attention to the injustice of the case and the many others like it. DC held several concerts and rallies in protest.
Bassey Ikpi, local poet and mental health advocate, created an organization built to assist people of color with mental illnesses. She expanded her non-profit by establishing ‘No Shame Day’ to help combat the stigma of speaking out on mental health.
Fashion is Art-
They say girls love painting their nails, so it is not to any surprise that the trend of nail art spread and took hold of nearly every bare nail bed belonging to the young and old. One nail tech from DC, Ajahmure Clovis made her mark here and everywhere your favorite celeb happened to be. She was also featured in a pampering party where her unique designs were the hit of the evening.
If you do not feel as if clothing is art, you may not know of Alexander McQueen or you need to invest in a MINTLEN tee. 2012 saw the unveiling of the newest brand to bring daily art into our lives through menswear. Created and designed by five, 20 something guys from the area, MINTLEN is set to make quite the impression.
