The best New Year’s resolution is peace on earth. Sound broad? It is not as broad as you think. When each individual resolves to bring peace into his or her live, peace on earth begins. How can you introduce peace into your life and into your family?
Resolve to listen more and speak less
Arguments have no fire when each person refuses to speak hurtful and unkind words. When you are in a disagreement, do not make it personal. You may want to be right, and you may be, but think about the cost of winning: are you firing up resentment?
Lay down the ground rules for your teen and stick to these.
When you make the rules and the consequences clear, your teen will at least know what is coming when the rules are broken. The important action for parents is to follow through. Actually, one or two follow throughs, and most teens will get the idea.
Cultivate peace within yourself
Do you worry? Start a Worry Journal. Record the things you worry about, and then make an appointment with yourself to worry for an hour or two on a specific day. This may sound silly, but it works. Many times when you open your Worry Journal at the start of your appointment, you will find that most of the things you were worried about are not even an issue now.
Get up an hour earlier than your family. Use this hour to sit quietly with a cup of coffee or tea. Watch the news, daydream, or read. Do not use the time to do work. You want to allow your mind a quiet time before the day begins.
Take a walk. A short walk while dinner is cooking, a quick walk on your lunch hour at work, or a walk around the block in the evening will do wonders for your peace of mind. Walking will oxygenate your blood and elevate your mood.
Add humor to your day.
Laughter is healthy. When you laugh, you burn more calories, reduce stress, improve your blood flow and immune system, and you can improve your rest and sleep. “We change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse and blood pressure go up, and we breathe faster, sending more oxygen to our tissues.” WebMD
Peace on earth starts with you. Peaceful people attract others, peaceful homes raise peaceful kids, and, overall, peaceful people live longer, giving them the opportunity to spread and teach peace on earth.
