So you want to get fit and enjoy the benefits of more exercise in 2013...but you aren't sure of how to achieve your goal. You could join a gym, but then you have to pay big bucks and motivate yourself to get there. Instead, try reaping the multiple benefits of a simple activity: Walking your dog. Learn how to bark up the right tree here.
- If neither you nor your dog have been pounding the pavement much, start slowly, with just a few blocks a day. Both of you will need to drink water before and after. Get inspiration to get moving from "Walking Wisdom: Three Generations, Two Dogs, and the Search for a Happy Life" by the father-son writing team of Deepak and Gotham Chopra.
- Use a correctly sized leash, collar and/or harness. If you're walking in the early morning or evening, choose a reflective model, such as Nite Ize NND-03-10L Nite Dawg Light Up Dog Collar or Dean and Tyler DT Dog Harness, Black With Reflective Trim.
- Got a reluctant dog and want to avoid the humiliation of a "drag the dog" trot? Try a healthy dog treat that's made in the USA for safety, such as Merrick Lamb Texas Hold' Ems or Smokehouse 100-Percent Natural Beef Munchies Dog Treats. Both earned five paw ratings (arf!).
- Track your progress and get motivated to go further each day with a pedometer, such as the Omron HJ-720ITFFP Pocket Pedometer.
