Sammath - Triumph in Hatred (2009, Folter)
You might think black metal died and got so mixed with other styles it had no voice, but Sammath have mixed death metal technique carefully into their black metal songs, making a testimony toward aggression that sounds like Zyklon-B merged with Angelcorpse. This CD does not relent; it drives forward constantly, and even when it pauses, it's just waiting to pounce.
The triumph of Sammath is working melodic riffs into a mass of charging rhythm riffing, but without losing the power of their basic riffs. The surging energy of that interaction keeps this CD from falling into irrelevance, but the balance of melody and destruction keeps it from ever getting boring.
Although this Dutch band has been around for over a decade, they came late to the black metal parade, but remain a submerged favorite for many because they understood the old school black metal approach, but never lost their own voice. As if politely sidestepping the neurotic and ironic newer metal styles, this band charge ahead with pure vengeance.
